A Crypto Momentum Rotation Strategy: Backtesting Notes
Momentum's core is "strong stays strong": the top performers of the recent past tend to keep leading in the near term. Crypto's fast sector rotation and sharp dispersion make momentum rotation a widely validated idea.
Basic framework
- Universe: a basket of sufficiently liquid majors (avoid manipulable small caps);
- Score: rank by trailing N-day (e.g. 30/90) returns or relative strength;
- Hold: hold the top few on a schedule (weekly/monthly) and rebalance into the new leaders.
Two pitfalls to avoid
- Survivorship bias: backtesting only coins that "still exist" overstates returns — many once-strong coins are dead. Include delisted coins;
- Rebalancing too often: fees and slippage eat momentum profits, and crypto fees aren't small — don't over-churn.
Tip: momentum works in trends and backfires in violent reversals (chasing tops). Add a market (BTC) trend filter — cut leverage or go flat when the market turns bearish, which greatly improves drawdown. Sizing: position sizing.
